Greater Mekong Subregion Core Environment Program (GMS-CEP)

In 1992, the six countries along the Mekong River–Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam–formed the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) with the launch of the GMS Economic Cooperation Program (ECP). Supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and facilitating regional investment, collaboration and integration across major growth sectors, the GMS-ECP Program has successfully stimulated economic growth in the GMS for the last 20 years.

GMS Core Environment Program (CEP) was initially launched in 2006 to response to growing concern about the environmental impacts of rapid economic development. Administered by ADB, overseen by the environment ministries of the six countries, and coordinated by the ADB Environment Operations Center, which was hosted by ADB’s Thailand Resident Mission, the US$ 22 million- GMS-CEP aimed to achieve an environmentally friendly and climate resilient goal. The specific achievements for the period of 2012-2018 is indicated in the Figure below.
